10 TOXIC HAIR CARE INGREDIENTS TO AVOID AND WHY?

10 Toxic Ingredients To Avoid

We know what you came here for...to search for reliable products for your hair journey and a loyal company to provide you with them.

At iRESTORE, we do just that. So, we feel we must provide you with healthy ingredients and warn you about potentially harmful products that you might not even be aware of.

Our products are made from natural ingredients, but other products might contain ingredients you assume are healthy but aren’t!

The average person has many products that they use consistently, but we’re unsure if they can honestly say they know what’s in them. And, in the U.S., we have to be a bit more careful because our guidelines aren’t as strict when it comes to prohibiting certain harmful chemicals in hair products.

With that said, we’re going to give you the lowdown on some ingredients to look out for when purchasing products. And keep in mind that these aren’t the only harmful ingredients, so we ask that you do some more research before buying future products.

Ingredients to Avoid

1.   Sulfates

Sulfates are very harsh on your hair and should be avoided. They do their job of stripping oil and dirt out of hair but do it too well to the point that it leads to damaging the naturally produced sebum that moisturizes your scalp. Sulfates can cause dandruff, flaking, itching, and the ability to allow hair to get dirty quickly. Sulfates are found in shampoos, shower gels, and most foaming products.

2.  Mineral Oil

Similar to sulfates, mineral oils can cover your hair and scalp so well that they suffocate them. Mineral oils can cause acne, an imbalance of oil levels in your scalp, and skin irritation.

3. Silicones

Silicones are advertised as a protective layer and coat your hair to leave it with a smooth, glossy look. They are suitable for bringing moisture to the hair but weigh your hair down and prevent moisture from getting to the hair, leading it to dry it out over time.

4. PVP/VA Copolymer

You know those good ole hairsprays you love? Yup, most of those contain PVP/VA copolymer and are found in most hair products that give you that hold element. It is made from petroleum, which is believed to irritate the scalp and even respiratory issues.

5. Parabens

When looking for parabens, you’ll likely see them labeled on products with words ending in paraben, for example, benzyl paraben and propylparaben. These are found in shampoo and are made to deter mold, and can dehydrate your hair.

6. Benzene

Benzene is mostly found in hair dyes and is known to cause cancers, including leukemia. There have been ties with benzene to immune system toxicity and other cancers of the blood cells. Research also suggests that expecting mothers exposed to benzene may see developmental damage to the fetus. With all that said, it is still one of the most used chemicals in the country.

7. Formaldehyde

This is a vapor that can be found in products for growing and cleansing and is currently being investigated for its potential safety concerns. It can also be found in other cleansing ingredients like sulfate, keratin, and glyoxylic acid, to name a few.

8. Synthetic Colors and Dyes

I know it’s hard because we love that pop of color at times, but, as we know, it’s not good for our hair. Many hair dyes use synthetic colors and dyes, damaging the hair cuticle and making it vulnerable to oxidative damage. Many are also made with coal tar, containing arsenic and lead that can be toxic to the scalp.

9. Sodium Hydroxide

You’ll see this most of the time in straightening treatments to alter the pH or acidity; however, sodium hydroxide can harm your hair when used at too high of concentration or pH levels.

10. Alcohol

The name says it all, and it should seem understandable that alcohol isn’t good for your hair. Like sulfates and mineral oils, alcohols like isopropyl, ethanol, and propyl can strip oils away from your scalp too effectively, leading to dry and brittle hair.
